Best Hot Dogs in New York

For those reluctant to partake of the time-honored tradition of New York's omnipresent hot dog carts, we've selected the absolute best of the burgeoning hot dog scene in the city. You're sure to relish these tasty American classics!

Bark Hot Dogs
(718) 789-1939
474 Bergen Street
Brooklyn, NY 11217
Finally, after years of a rapidly gentrifying Park Slope, someone adds the missing ingredient of any credible neighborhood by opening a hot dog joint.

(212) 414-0600
26 E 17th St
New York, NY 10003
Jeremy Spector's simplistic hot dog joint features tube steaks from Violet Hills Farms served on deliciously miniature and ingeniously crisp baguettes.

Gray's Papaya - Greenwich Village

(212) 260-3532
402 6th Ave
New York, NY 10011+8416
For over 20 years, Gray's Papaya has sort of functioned as the Statue of Liberty ("give us your tired, your hungry..."). It constantly prints clever advertisements that fill its windows and laud its many accomplishments ("The biggest bargain in Manhattan!"). It's a kind of indoor hot dog cart with a counter amd gaudy paper fruit decorations hanging from the ceiling. And those allegedly healthful whipped fruit drinks, those infamous hot dogs... it all makes for great theater, Coney Island-style.

Nathan's Famous
(718) 946-2202
1310 Surf Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11224+2404
This is it, the most famous Nathan's that's over 90 years old now. After a ride on the Cyclone, it's almost required you down one or more of these hot dogs. Japanese champion eater Takeru Kobayashi swallowed 53 and 1/2 in 2005. How many will you eat?

Shake Shack
(212) 889-6600
Madison Square Park
New York, NY 10010
Famed restaurateur Danny Meyer opened the Shake Shack as a novel way to bring high quality summer food (burgers, fries, hot dogs, shakes) to the masses. The burgers are juicy and come on a great bun; the fries are crisp and tasty; and the caramel shakes and coffee shakes are especially delicious. Quality has its price; obviously Danny Meyer does not create McDonalds-style fast food.

The Smoke Joint
(718) 797-1011
87 S Elliot Place
Brooklyn, NY 11217
Tucked away in the boundary-shifting Fort Greene, you might have to take a little walk from BAM to stumble on the Smoke Joint, but it's worth the stumble. The offerings are all equally sinful and delicious: the barbecue "hacked & stacked" chicken is beyond reproach, the beef is similarly undeniable. The sauces offered run the necessary gamut of flavor successfully, but with the flavor that's cooked into the food, sauces are hardly necessary
